Second Collection of Letters and Articles relating to the Pastoral Letter (Found as one Binder) Under tab (which should be) labeled "Y2" * * * Discover Magazine; December 1982 by Marion Lewenstein We are convinced that masses of evidence render the application of the concept of evolution to man and the other primates beyond serious dispute.' That resounding verdict in favor of evolution might chill any creationist's heart - especially considering the source. Creationists have tried to enlist Christians of all stripes behind their fundamentalist banner proclaiming that the earth's creation, and man's happened precisely according to the Book of Genesis. Yet the scientists who wrote that sentence - the final words in a working draft of conclusions - resolved upon it last may amid the luxuriant gardens of the Vatican, after spirited deliberations in a handsome Renaissance villa called the Casina Pius IV. They were members of a seminar arranged by the Popes's own Pontifical Academy of Sciences, an arm of the Vatican little known among Roman Catholics. The academy, and august body of 70 scientists - 24 of them Nobel laureates - from roughly 25 nations, meet regularly under papal auspices to discuss and debate scientific questions. |
